Buying a puppy to show from Hotpot and Doddsline Kennels
. We are willing to sell puppies for the show ring, but you must understand that every puppy born is not going to be a winner, and every puppy sold as show quality is not going to be a champion.
What we can promise is that the show quality puppy at time of purchase will have no obvious breed faults and will be a puppy we hope will be a credit to our kennels in the future.
To purchase a potential show quality puppy you need to discuss this with us at time of inquiry, it is no good buying a pet (pet just means it’s not show quality but has no detriment to its health, breed type or temperament) then deciding you would like to show.
Once we are aware of what you want from your Lancashire Heeler we will notify you as soon as we think there is a suitable puppy. Be prepared to wait, if anyone informs you that they will sell you one to show out of an unborn litter, a planned litter, or a very young litter, beware, this breeder cannot possibly know if there will be a show dog among them.
The only real way to determine if a puppy may be show quality is not to buy until it is at least 4-5 months old. Unfortunately this is impractical for most new owners as they want to socialise, train and have their puppy from a young age. This is why we can only sell young puppies as potential show dogs.
While you wait for your puppy study the breed standard long and hard, educate yourself in what the terminology means. Eg. What is a level topline? What is a tail set? What is natural free movement?
Make yourself familiar with how a Lancashire Heeler is shown and where there are classes on for them. Again we are willing to help you with any of your questions.
There is no such thing as a perfect dog, but it is important to aim as near to the breed standard as possible. A dog which has a major fault or faults should really not be shown, It is detrimental to our breed and at the end of the day I would hope we are all striving to show Lancashire Heelers that we are proud to call the best examples of our breed.
